Xolotl was an Aztec god of fire, lightning, death, twins, misfortune, sickness, and deformities, often depicted with a dog's head. As the canine twin brother of the god Quetzalcoatl, he played a crucial role as a psychopomp, guiding souls through the underworld (Mictlán). He is also famous for his role in the creation myth, where he helped retrieve bones from the underworld to create new humans, and for his shape-shifting abilities, which are the origin of the axolotl's name.
